College advisors are urged to listen to the students we advise, making a real effort to get to know them, their dreams, and the realities of their situations before coaching them along their academic paths. That’s a good thing. Still, there comes a time when we need to tell hard truths and give real advice.
This video was originally intended as a commentary on male/female communication styles, but it could also speak to advisor/advisee realtionships. You might recall the last student who said, “I’m leaving all the math courses until the end because I don’t like math.” Or the last student who needed to repeat a failed course in order to salvage their GPA.
Sometimes, it is indeed about the nail.
Enjoy your weekend.
