I get kind of grouchy sitting in front of a computer all day. I hate sitting there while my muscles seize up and then turn useless. After a while, my wrist starts to hurt and my eyes start to hurt and my bum gets awfully flat. It’s really depressing and uncomfortable.
In the spirit of making technology a more pleasurable part of your workday, MOVE!
- Use those muscles. Do toe raises at the copy machine. Repeatedly straighten your legs while sitting. Do some pushups while you’re in the freezing server room waiting for a server to reboot. Oh wait. I’m the only crazy one who does that. In seriousness, get an app for your phone that tells you to do some exercises. Try Office Exercise & Stretch for Android or Office-Fit for iOS. This isn’t a replacement for a regular workout, but is a great start.
- Stretch. Print out a little poster to remind you.
- Change your focal length. When your eyes are fixed at the same distance for an extended period of time, it is really bad for them.
- Stand up. Go to the water fountain. Take a call while standing.
I’m going to go take my own advice now.
